48 hours in Comporta

Comporta can be a noun, an adjective, or a verb, each form carrying a distinct meaning that resonates uniquely with every individual. For me, it’s the ultimate blend of laid-back luxury, natural beauty, and that unmistakable Portuguese charm that makes you want to slow down and savor every moment. And it’s a place where mobile signals often disapper. Nestled along the Atlantic coast, Comporta boasts some of the softest, whitest sand you’ll find anywhere, with a landscape painted in shades of green from the rice fields and the muted tones of cork trees set amidst the pine forests. It’s a place that invites you to leave your worries behind and embrace the simple, yet luxurious pleasures of life.

Located just a two-hour drive north of our home in the Algarve, Comporta was calling, and we answered. We packed light—just a duffle bag and a chic beach tote—and set off in my beloved Mercedes AMG convertible. The local radio station played a mix of Portuguese classics and summer hits as we cruised along the scenic route, the wind in my hair, an SPF-hat firmly in place, and my favorite old pair of driving sunnies perched on my nose. It was the perfect prelude to a weekend designed for nothing but relaxation and recharging.

DAY 1

Lunch: Sensorial delight at JNcQUOI’s Deli

As we rolled into the heart of Comporta, we stopped for a bite at Deli Comporta, the latest JNcQUOI  space. With their adage, to “do what you want, when you want,” they are, in my humble opinion, leaders in the forefront of exquisite design, funky mindset, a contemporary twist on all that is the spirit of the Alentejo (area of Portugal where Comporta sits) paired with consistently delicious gastronomy and beautifully trained staff. Whether in Lisbon or Comporta, one of my favorite dishes is the Salada JNcQUOI – crunchy iceberg lettuce topped with Alaskan king crab with a hint of truffle vinaigrette.

SUBLIME COMPORTA: Unwind and immerse in nature

Sublime Comporta continues to inspire with each visit. From its humble beginnings with a few beach-inspired, laid-back rooms and one restaurant, today, it still maintains its natural beauty, yet with numerous elevated dining experiences, the inclusion of their beach club at Praia da Carvalhal, additional Suites and 2-5 bedroom Cabana Villas, and their sustainable Bio-Pool suites. Understated luxury at its best.

The 9 Bio-Pool Cabanas overlook a biological pool, inspired by the neighbouring fishing port. The terrace with their outdoor beds invited us to sprawl, nap, and to cool off in the freshwater surrounded by the symphony of frogs and vegetation.

Late afternoon we walked through the herb garden for some spa time ready to remove the tightness and knots in my neck and shoulders. Some serious pampering was needed. We were not disappointed and immediately rebooked for the following day. Book the 80-minute sports massage if you like medium to hard pressure. Rejuvenating not relaxing…

EVENING: CAIPIRINHAS & PASTA

Jacaré da Comporta , tucked away in the heart of Comporta village is inspired by its namesake in Brasil and features Italian cuisine. We started with a wood-fired Pomodoro pizza, thin and light crust, followed by Seabass and risotto (for me) and Pasta with mushrooms and zucchini for Alan. Had a great view of the sunken bar and the barmen mixing our caipirinhas.  So good, we gave this our WBB (We’ll be back) rating.

DAY 2

Mid-Morning: Beach Time at Praia da Carvalhal

After breakfast, we head to Sublime’s Beach Club. The expansive sandy shore is perfect for a long walk, sunbathing, or a dip in the Atlantic. The beach’s laid-back vibe, with chic beach bars and unspoiled dunes, will make you feel like you’ve found a secret paradise. A 20 minute drive (or hotel shuttle) away, guests of Sublime Comporta are entitled to free use of beach beds.

Lunch: Portuguese food at a River Restaurant

For lunch, we booked Sado perched on the river which gives the restaurant its name. Traditional portuguese recipes highlighting the rice dishes that are emblematic of the region. We tried the Arroz de  (coriander rice )and the tomato rice with our clams and fish.  Raffia, thatched roof, basket lamps, muted furnishings and cushions dominated the interiors.

Afternoon: Wander

Continue your exploration with a visit to Comporta village. Wander through its narrow streets lined with whitewashed cottages, browse the boutique shops selling artisanal goods, and stop by Museu do Arroz (Rice Museum) to learn about the region’s rice cultivation history.

RICE by Marta Mantero is one of those places where you walk in and are inspired to redecorate your home and change your wardrobe…yes you never need anything but always find something. Upgraded my summer shoes for a pair of handmade raffia and leather slides by Yvonne Waska in sunshine yellow and comporta blue. A memory of Comporta and the longing for summer to stay.

Evening: Canalha Comporta Pop-up

Chef João Rodrigues of Canalha Lisbon fame has a pop-up located in Sublime for the evenings during the summer.  The relaxed atmosphere  with strands of  garlic and piri-piri hanging from the ceiling, and a fresh seafood display and produce at the entrance, guarantees food with minimal intervention. The close tables mean that you may end up making a few friends with your neighbours. I love to see a chef prepping my food in front of me, and as a fellow dog-lover, happy to see that well-behaved four-legged friends are allowed.

DAY 3

Before we head to Lisbon, we return to Comporta village in search of caffeine and breakfast. Gomes, the village mercearia known for its product and quaint baskets hanging from the ceiling, now runs a delightful breakfast – brunch- lunch spot with al-fresco seating, and the most scrumptious smoked salmon on toast. Not to be missed. Option to purchase the limited edition, Annie Leibovitz SUMO book (white gloves available to browse) for €7 500.

Final Thoughts

Comporta is a place where you are forced to slow down, and the simple pleasures of life take center stage. Whether you’re lounging on the beach, exploring the countryside, or savoring the local cuisine, every moment in Comporta feels like a luxury. After 48 hours, you’ll leave feeling rejuvenated, with memories of a tranquil, unspoiled paradise. WBB – We’ll be back!
